SH1 will be closed overnight between Waipu and Brynderwyn from 8pm to 6am for three more nights from Tuesday, 1 December, to Thursday, 3 December.
“We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause travellers, but it is important that we complete the improvements on the Brynderwyns to a high standard for the safety of everyone,” said the NZTA’s State Highways Manager for Northland, Tommy Parker.
During the night-time closures, through traffic will be diverted between Shoemaker Road, Waipu - through Waipu Cove and Mangawhai - and the intersection of State Highways 1 and 12 at Brynderwyn.
“The detour is about 20km longer than SH1, and drivers should allow an additional half to one hour for their journeys if they are driving between Whangarei and Auckland,” Mr Parker said.
The NZTA will continue to have people on duty at key intersections and on patrol along the diversion route to help motorists.
“The diversion may be unfamiliar to many people, particularly in the dark, and we want to do everything we can to make sure they arrive at their destinations on time and safely,” Mr Parker added.
The Brynderwyn improvements include a complete re-surfacing of the 2.5km section of highway, new road markings, repairs to culverts and guard rails, improvements to drainage, and vegetation control.
