Bad weather has disrupted plans by the NZ Transport Agency to make significant changes to a section of Auckland's Southwestern Motorway (State Highway 20) and the Walmsley Road on-ramp at Mangere Bridge this Sunday night (29 May).
It had planned to open an additional third southbound motorway lane under the Walmsley Road on ramp, and, at the same time, make operational safety improvements to the on-ramp itself to prevent drivers using it from "weaving" across the motorway to join SH20A for Auckland International Airport.
These changes are planned to be introduced sometime next week depending on the weather and you will be advised of the date later.
In the meantime, closures of the southbound lanes of the Southwestern Motorway from Walmsley Road to Kirkbride Road (SH20A) and to Massey Road (SH20) will go ahead as planned for five consecutive nights from this Sunday The closures will operate from 9pm until 5am the next morning. Signposted detours will be in place to help drivers, and those heading towards the airport should allow a little more time for their journeys.
Northbound lanes are not affected by the closure and all will remain open. If, for any reason, we are not able to carry out work on the southbound lanes work may be done on the northbound side. However, we will not be closing both directions on any one night.
