Wayby Station Road closes for safety upgrade

|

The NZ Transport Agency plans to reopen Wayby Station Road a week earlier on Saturday 22 March after it has completed safety improvements at the intersection of the road and State Highway 1 near Wellsford.

“There’s not a lot of room on Wayby Station Road and by making it wider and levelling it out it means drivers will be able to see further down SH1at the intersection” says the Transport Agency’s Highway Manager, Tommy Parker.

“We know that this closure will impact on the community considerably but it does mean less disruption in the long run by allowing our contractors to get in there and do the improvements more quickly.”

Mr Parker says everything will be done to minimise that disruption and complete the work as soon as possible.

“We would have liked to provide more notice to residents and the wider community; we’ve asked the project team do whatever it takes complete the upgrade as soon as possible, so I hope the community can show them some patience while they get on with work.”

In the meantime, the Transport Agency says drivers who use Wayby Station Road to travel to Wellsford, Warkworth and beyond should allow more time, and follow the posted detour.

Safety improvements at the intersection include:-

  • Designated right turning bays from SH1 to Wayby Valley Road and Wayby Station Road
  • Improving the line of sight for drivers by levelling a section of SH1
  • Relocating the start of a SH1 northbound passing lane
  • Realigning the Wayby Station Road approach to the intersection
  • Upgrades to lighting, signage and lane marking

In the past five years to 2008, there have been 20 crashes at the intersection.  Six people were seriously injured, and 22 received minor injuries.
