Tairāwhiti Roads has begun work to help reduce noise and vibration from traffic on Awapuni Road in Gisborne.
General Manager Dave Hadfield says Phase 1 of this work involves moving fire hydrants between Grey Street and Roberts Road away from the driving lane to stop the noise created by tyres making contact with the hydrant lids.
“This means that water mains will need to be turned off to properties between Grey Street and Roberts Road at 5.30am on Thursday 13 December. It is expected they will need to be turned off for 15-30 minutes.
“These fire hydrants will be relocated to the southern side of the road and in January we will begin work to move the fire hydrants between Roberts Road and Stanley Road.
“Over 5100 vehicles use Awapuni Road each day, including many heavy vehicles, and residents and businesses have told us that the noise and vibration from this traffic is causing disruption.
“In addition to moving the fire hydrants, Tairāwhiti Roads will be replacing the current chip seal on Awapuni Road between Grey Street and Stanley Road with asphalt concrete, creating a wider median strip and making drainage improvements,” Mr Hadfield says.
Tairāwhiti Roads thanks residents for their patience and understanding while the work is underway.
