While improvements to SH1and intersections  through Warkworth continues, it’s the work  taking place beneath the surface of the road that motorists can’t see  that’s also keeping the NZ Transport Agency and  Rodney District Council, and their contractors, busy.

Approximately 50 per cent of the work being undertaken by NZTA and the Council in Warkworth over the next few years is the future-proofing of Rodney’s water mains, communications, and electricity lines and sewerage.

March was a busy month with work focused on completing the gravity sewer from Whitaker Road to Palmer Street pump station and the installation of a new stormwater drain between the Woodcocks Road and Whitaker Road intersections.

As the Mahurangi River has in the past experienced flooding during heavy rain, the second stormwater drain will ensure better management and redirection of stormwater runoff back into the Mahurangi River.

“During the planning stages of the project it was agreed NZTA and Rodney would combine the roading and services upgrades under one contract,” said the NZTA’s State Highways Manager for Auckland and Northland, Tommy Parker.

“It made sense from an economical and practical viewpoint to get these upgrades completed at the same time and so minimise disruption to the community as much as possible.”

Overhead power and telephone lines have also been relocated underground along SH1 between Woodcocks Road and Whitaker Road intersections giving the area a cleaner and more aesthetically pleasing look.  At the same time they are less vulnerable to weather damage, trees and airborne debris which will ensure a  more reliable power supply.

Work will stop over the Easter period from the afternoon of Thursday 1 April and resume on Tuesday 6 April.
