Roading contractors in the Gisborne region are on standby to monitor any damage caused to the state highway network by heavy rainfall.
Forecast rain to hit the already-soaked region from this afternoon has eased slightly but the heaviest downpour is now expected later tonight.
Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency is reiterating its call for motorists to avoid any unnecessary travel if at all possible.
Waka Kotahi’s System Manager for Gisborne, Martin Colditz says after such a large amount of rain over the past week and a half, there’s a real chance of more slips in the area.
“We had to close SH35 last week as a result of the downpours, and contractors are currently onsite, monitoring the road. If needed, they may have to close the road."
"If needed, any necessary closure would have to be done at short notice, and while we will communicate it, if you don’t have to travel, please stay away from the road."
“As we’re now expecting the heaviest downpours overnight, we will have contractors out at first light to closely assess any damage,” says Mr Colditz.
“I know how frustrating the effects of this weather must be for road users and so again I really want to thank people for their understanding."
"We’re working as quickly as we can to avoid and minimise damage and to ensure the areas which do suffer damage are cleared as quickly as possible."
