Gisborne locals and visitors will soon be able to walk, run, bike or scoot all the way from Wainui to Kaiti, with the completion of stage two of the Wainui shared walking and cycling path expected by Christmas.
A celebration and blessing was held on Tuesday for stage two of the project which extends the popular Muriel Jones shared pathway from Sponge Bay to Endcliffe Road.
Tairāwhiti Roads General Manager Dave Hadfield says the project is part of Gisborne’s Urban Cycleways Programme aimed at getting more people on their bikes.
“The eventual completion of stage two of the Wainui shared pathway will come at a great time – summer will have arrived and kids will be on their school holidays, so we expect to see plenty of locals and visitors getting out there and enjoying the new pathway.
The $1.7 million project was fully funded by the NZ Transport Agency through the National Land Transport Fund
Other projects under Gisborne’s Urban Cycleways Programme include the development of a two-way on-road cycleway along Rutene Road, widening of Gladstone Road Bridge and construction of a separated path on William Pettie Bridge.
The projects are being delivered in a joint effort from the NZ Transport Agency and Gisborne District Council through Tairāwhiti Roads.
