The War Memorial in Waimangaroa north of Westport is being relocated by about 50 metres from its current site to allow safety improvement work to be carried out on SH 67.
The New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) says the permanent relocation of the memorial take place on Wednesday 18 March
NZTA Canterbury-West Coast Regional Director Mark Yaxley says the decision to shift the memorial was not taken lightly. However, it was necessary so essential safety work to a nearby road junction could proceed.
"The NZTA appreciated the movement of the memorial is sensitive and recognizes the special place it holds in the local community. Because of this the Agency has worked with the RSA, NZ Army and the local community to address their key concerns and they are generally comfortable with what is being proposed."
Mr Yaxley says two side road entry's onto the SH 67 are being removed to provide just the one. Seal widening and provision of a right-turn bay will also be carried out as part of the work. These changes will help improve visibility for drivers and reduce the potential for traffic conflict.
