The wider community is being invited to find out more about the project that will create a landscaped ‘gateway’ effect for Hamilton.
The NZ Transport Agency is holding a public information evening for the Southern Interchange on the Hamilton section of the Waikato Expressway at the Tamahere Community Centre on Wednesday 14 September from 2.30pm to 7.00pm. People can attend any time during these hours.
The community’s views on the project have been taken in to account and a refined design has now been submitted to the Waikato District Council.
The Transport Agency’s acting Waikato State Highways Manager, Niclas Johansson, said people who attend will be able to see the improvements being made to the Southern Interchange.
“We have already held a number of information events for local residents and the immediate Tamahere community.
“This event will inform the wider community,” Mr Johansson said.
The Southern Interchange will extend from the Mangaone Stream to the Tamahere Interchange, including the east-west link across the expressway and the connection with Cambridge Road.
The refined design retains the connectivity of the previous design, but simplifies the intersection layout, provides off-road cycling and walking connections and adds a mini-roundabout at the entrance to Cherry Lane.
By moving the main expressway lanes further west, the project has also gained space to build earth mounds to reduce noise and increase space for landscaping. This will enable a landscaped ‘gateway’ effect to be built for the city.
Early works will begin early in 2017 but the main earthworks will not be carried out until the summer of 2017/18.
