Waikato and Bay of Plenty state highway works for April 2022

Road contractors across the Waikato and Bay of Plenty state highway network will be hopping home and potentially enjoying a well-earned treat over the Easter and ANZAC Day holiday period.

Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency and its contractors are at the tail-end of an ambitious programme to improve safety and resilience of the network, and the successive long weekends are a great time for crews to catch their breath, says Cara Lauder, Waikato System Manager, Maintenance and Operations.

“Over the Easter and ANZAC Day holiday weekends the majority of our sites will shut down at midday the day before the long weekend commences, before re-starting at 9am each Tuesday. This ensures that holiday traffic has unimpeded use of the state highway network, however there may be long-term sites with temporary speed limits and/or uneven surfaces. Road users must pay attention to any temporary traffic signage to ensure they have a safe and enjoyable holiday journey.

No matter whether people are off on an egg-citing journey this Easter Weekend, or off to a Dawn Service over ANZAC Weekend, Waka Kotahi wants to ensure everyone gets to their destination safely.

Works will continue across the region during the weekdays between the two long weekends, however we will be aiming to minimise any disruption throughout this time. We recommend the use of the holiday journey planner to pick the best time to travel, along with checking our Journey Planner on the day to check for any roadworks or unplanned events,” says Ms Lauder.

Bay of Plenty

Tauranga

Takitimu North Link Stage One: Wairoa Road will have stop/go in place for trucks crossing, and a diversion road is live with a speed limit of 30km/h. Minden Road has service relocations taking place with stop/go traffic management. Shoulder closures will be in place throughout the week on Cambridge Road from 9am Tuesday. On SH29 Takitimu Drive Toll Road a reduced speed limit of 80km/hr will be in place from 9am Tuesday while service relocation works take place. More information(external link).
SH2 Wairoa River Bridge: Resurfacing work will take place from 8 May for five nights. Stop/go traffic management will be in place, apart from between 8pm – 12am on Thursday 12 May, when the road will be closed. Over-weight, over-dimension and HPMV vehicles to stack either side of the bridge, all other vehicles to use Wairoa Road, Crawford Road, Poripori Road and SH29. More information(external link).
SH2 Hewletts Road: As part of the Totara Street cycleway project, night works will take place from early May through to July 2022, from 8pm to 5am each night between Tasman Quay and Totara Street. Eastbound traffic will be reduced to one lane through the intersection. Minimal delays are expected. More information(external link).
SH2 Bay Link: The temporary signalised crossing on SH2 (near the Bayfair shopping centre) will be removed and the work zone in the middle of the road enlarged to allow work on the northern ramp of the Bayfair flyover to begin. The removal and the traffic switch will take place overnight on Tuesday 19 April, Wednesday 20 April and Thursday 21 April (from approximately 7pm until 7am the following day, finishing Friday morning). There will be lane closures on SH2 between Concord Ave and the Bayfair roundabout while these works are underway.

Line marking and removal of redundant line marking on the section of Girven Road between Gloucester Road and the Bayfair roundabout will take place overnight from approximately 7pm to 7am the following morning on Wednesday 20 April and Thursday 21 April 2022. There will be lane closures on Girven Road while this work is underway.

If you are travelling at this time, please drive with caution through the project site, reduce your speed and follow the directions provided on traffic management signage. SH29 Tauriko West: Investigation works to provide the information needed for the next steps of the Tauriko West enabling works are underway and expected to take place through to early-May 2022. Works will mostly take place overnight between 7pm and 6am, with generally one active work site at any time. It is expected that most works will be completed over one to two nights at each location. Traffic management will include shoulder and lane closures. More information(external link).
SH29 Omanawa River Bridge: Enabling works have commenced ahead of bridge strengthening. Over-weight and over-dimension permits to be suspended from 26 April to 24 May; a temporary speed limit will apply to all other vehicles during this time, while the strengthening product cures. Western Bay of Plenty

SH2 Waihī to Ōmokoroa: Safety improvement works continue at four active sites: between Athenree Road and Tanners Point Road, Rea Road / Tetley Road intersection, Lund Road to Sargent Drive and Apata Station Road to Esdaile Road. Minor delays are expected.

Tetley Road is temporarily closed between SH2 and Rereatukahia Pā Road for approximately two months. Detour routes are available via Marshall Road, and only add a couple of minutes to the overall travel time. Please follow detour signage. More information(external link).

Rotorua

SH5 Tarukenga to Ngongotahā: Barrier installation is underway between Dalbeth Road to just north of the golf course. Traffic management will be in place. These works are expected to be complete in April 2022. More information(external link).
SH33 Te Ngae Junction to Paengaroa: Safety improvement upgrade work continues on the section north of Pareteiro - Sun Valley Curve passing lane. This includes widening the shoulders, installing a wide centreline and installing roadside safety barriers. More information(external link).

Eastern Bay of Plenty

SH2 Edgecumbe: Asphalt resurfacing will continue on the eastbound lane of SH2 between Tawa Street and Main Street, on Tuesday 19 and Wednesday 20 April. Work will take place between 6pm and 6am, with the road closed during this time. A temporary speed limit will be in place throughout the day while this work is completed. Heavy vehicles detour via SH34 and Western Drain Road, general vehicles via Tawa Street and Main Street.

Tairāwhiti

SH35 Tairāwhiti: Overnight closures (7pm-7am) will remain in place on SH35 between Tokomaru Bay and Te Puia Springs, following the March weather event. Contractors are working through the impacts of Cyclone Fili, which made landfall in the region this week, and people are advised to check the Waka Kotahi Journey Planner website (journeys.nzta.govt.nz) for up-to-date information.

Waikato

East Waikato

SH25 Coroglen: Strengthening work on the Waiwawa River Bridge (SH25) in Coroglen continues and is expected to be complete in the second half of 2022. More information(external link).
SH27 Mangawhero Stream Bridge: A detour is in place on SH27 until 19 April to allow for the completion of new stretches of road either side of the new bridge being built over the Mangawhero Stream. Traffic is being detoured along SH29, Hopkins Road and Hinuera Road, adding around 3.7 kilometres to a journey between Tirau and Matamata. More information(external link).

West Waikato

SH1 Cobham Drive: The Ring Road – Wairere Drive extension project continues, and is expected to be completed by mid-2022. More information(external link).
SH1 Tamahere: Day-time tree-felling continues until late April on SH1 between the new Southern Interchange and Newell Road, from 9am until 3pm each day. Dates and times will vary depending on bat monitoring results and weather. There are occasional north-bound traffic detours via SH21 and SH3, and some stop/go while trees are felled. SH1B Puketaha: State Highway 1B east of Hamilton is temporarily closed at the southern end of Telephone Road, detour via Holland Road, Waverley Road and Seddon Road. More information(external link).
SH1 Maungatautari: Tree-felling, road surfacing and safety improvements will take place from 19 April. SH1 will have stop/go traffic management and a reduced speed limit from 19 to 21 April, 9pm to 6am. The road will then be closed between 9am and 3pm each day between 26 and 28 April. SH39 Mangaotama Stream Bridge: This bridge on SH39 remains restricted to heavy traffic, with detours in place. The best alternative route for freight is to use SH3 and SH1 through Hamilton and Te Awamutu. A tender has been awarded for the necessary repair work and we will share the details of this once they are confirmed. More information(external link).
SH30 Kopaki: Work has commenced on the drop out between Kopaki Rd and Ohirea Rd, temporary traffic lights are in place to control traffic, along with a temporary speed restriction of 30 km/h.

North Waikato

SH1 Hampton Downs: Resurfacing between Pokeno and Hampton Downs continues, with work taking place between 9pm and 5am. Works are ongoing until mid-May. At times SH1 will be down to one lane, or closed with an associated detour, in one direction. More information(external link).
SH1 Ohinewai: Work continues to install roadside barriers and re-position streetlights. Lane restrictions and temporary speed limits are in place. Work is expected to be complete in early-May. More information(external link).
SH1 Ngaruawahia: A northbound closure for barrier removal will be in place from Tuesday 19 to Thursday 21 April, between 7pm and 6am each night. Detour via Ngāruawāhia, High-Productivity or Over-Dimension vehicles use SH1B and SH26, please note that the closure on SH1B will add to travel time on this route.. More information(external link).

For 24 hours following completion of chipseal sites, a 50km/h temporary speed limit will be in place until the road is swept and line marking reinstated. Please take extra care through all work sites and allow extra time for your journey.
