The NZ Transport Agency (NZTA) advises that urgent remedial road works are about to start just to the north of the Matahorua Gorge and the Matahorua Gorge Realignment project in the vicinity of the Samarkand Station, on SH2 about 50km north of Napier/70km south of Wairoa.

The 400m section of state highway was scheduled to be rebuilt next year, however, due to its deteriorated condition, the road will need to be reconstructed this month.
“The section of state highway will be reconstructed relatively quickly by recycling the road, which is a cost effective temporary solution to ensure that it remains fit and safe for traffic during the coming winter months,” Napier State Highway Manager Mark Kinvig said.
“The planned permanent rebuild, including improvements to the current curves, will be undertaken next summer as part of the Matahorua Gorge realignment project.”
The urgent work programme is scheduled to take place between Monday 15th March and Saturday 27th March inclusive.
It involves lane closures in one direction at a time between about 6.30am and 6.30pm each day. At other times both lanes will be open to traffic, however, temporary speed limits will be in place.
A temporary 70kph speed limit also applies to this section of highway until the urgent temporary works start next week.
Mr Kinvig says manual stop and go signs will be used to control the traffic flow, with delays of only about two to five minutes expected.
Motorists are asked to observe the directions of on-site personnel.
NZTA expects the work to be completed within 2 weeks. However, the works are weather dependent and may be delayed if there is bad weather.
