The NZ Transport Agency says contractors will be working hard to re-open State Highway 4 next week as work continues to repair the effects of last month’s major flood event in and around Whanganui.
Transport Agency Regional State Highway Manager David McGonigal says the team are working hard towards a target of opening the road first thing on Monday morning (20 July), but with more heavy weather on the way the situation will have to be monitored continuously.
“Unfortunately heavy rain is forecast for this weekend and we hope there will be no further slips,” says Mr McGonigal.
“We know how frustrating these disruptions are for everyone, particularly local residents and businesses, and we will re-open the highway as soon as we are sure that it is safe to do so,” he says.
There will still be sections of road open as a single lane only, where traffic management will be in place. Mr McGonigal reminds motorists that challenging conditions are across the entire roading network, and urged motorists to keep their wits about them, avoid complacency, and obey all speed limits without exception.
“Safety is always at the front of our minds. Just because a highway is open doesn't mean it’s plain sailing. It is winter and severe weather is common, so debris, slips, blocked drains, surface flooding, one-lane restrictions and potholes are still widespread, and it is essential people put safety first, drop their speeds and expect the unexpected.
“It is also essential to drive with extra care to keep contractors safe while they are working on the roads.”
