The NZ Transport Agency is carrying out important maintenance work to help ensure the temporary bypass of SH35 at Busby's Hill remains a viable alternative route for light vehicles. This includes the application of a metal road surface. To enable the NZTA to carry out this maintenance, changes have been made to the one-way system in place at the Tuakau Road section of the alternative route.
Please note that the period of time during which vehicles will be allowed through is now 15 minutes in every alternate hour in each direction. This is reduced from 45 minutes previously. This means vehicles should try to arrive at the junction on the hour. If existing queues take longer than 15 minutes to clear, all queuing traffic will be allowed through.
All traffic heading south may proceed on even hours for the first 15 minutes of the hour (eg 2-2.15pm, 4-4.15pm), from the Ihungia Road/Tuakau Road intersection. Northbound traffic can proceed through Tuakau Road on odd hours for the first 15 minutes of each hour (3-3.15pm, 5-5.15pm, etc), from the junction of Tuakau Road/Mata Road.
This applies to daylight hours only (ie 7am to 5pm) and continues until further notice. Traffic can use the road in both directions at night. NZTA contractors are on-site managing traffic in both directions.
The alternative route remains unsuitable for heavy vehicles, but the NZTA hopes to allow restricted heavy vehicle access in the near future.
The NZTA urges motorists to exercise caution as this is a narrow and unsealed route, and advises them to check www.highwayinfo.govt.nz(external link) for up-to-date information on highway conditions and closures.
The NZTA thanks locals and motorists for all their patience and understanding over the last week.
The NZTA will continue to issue updates on this closure as developments arise.
