Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency crews will be working along SH1 through Timaru from Tuesday night this week (7 March) for up to five nights.
This work is part of a larger package of full renewals along the Timaru highway which started last October.
“Given the traffic volumes through Timaru in daytime hours, all the resurfacing work is happening overnight for our workers’ safety, 8 pm to 6 am the next day,” says John Keenan Maintenance Contract Manager in South Canterbury for Waka Kotahi.
Traffic will be managed with Stop/Go operators, so drivers need to factor in a few extra minutes to get through Timaru overnight. People should also anticipate disruptions on the local roads joining SH1 also - Beverley Road, Wai-Iti Road, Sefton St East.
The crews will start at the Evans St/Beverley Road intersection then move south over the Wai-Iti Road intersection on Theodosia St to Sefton St East (SH78 to the port).
If it is wet, work will be rescheduled to the next dry night.
Waka Kotahi thanks all highway users for taking care around crews and building in some extra time this week after 8 pm and before 6 am. If people can avoid these areas of work this week after 8 pm, that will help keep traffic moving.
