Three tonnes of rubbish dumped at Karapiro roadside restarea

|

The NZ Transport Agency is keen to hear from anyone who may know about the dumping of over three tonnes of rubbish at a rest area on State Highway 1 near Karapiro this week.

The Agency had to remove the dumped material yesterday (Wednesday 6 March) and it is likely that it happened the night before (Tuesday 5 March).

“The rubbish was left near the back of the rest area located about a kilometre south of the Keely Reserve/boat ramp, where it could not be seen from the highway or from across the river,” says Highway Network Operations Manager, Karen Boyt. “It also appears that whoever did the tipping ensured that they left nothing in the rubbish that could identify them.”

"We would be keen to hear from anyone who may have information about this incident. This illegal dumping of rubbish created a potential health hazard for people using the rest area; and it polluted the surrounding environment.  It has also been costly to remove."

"While visibility into the tipping site from either side of the rest stop is poor, people who may have used the rest area for a break over the last week may have seen a truck parked in that location, prior to the dumping incident. If so, we would appreciate hearing from anyone who might have information about this incident. All information will be treated in confidence."

Information can be phoned through to 07 958 7220.
