The Kapiti Expressway means business

The MacKays to Peka Peka Expressway is now officially underway, and Kapiti businesses won't have to wait for the project to finish to potentially benefit from its construction.

An Open Day this Monday 9 December will shed light on the opportunities and requirements for businesses to work with the MacKays to Peka Peka Alliance (M2PP) who are delivering the Kapiti Expressway section of the Wellington Northern Corridor.

NZ Transport Agency Wellington Highways Manager Rod James says he is hoping to see businesses of all shapes, sizes and services turning up to see what opportunities the project may hold for them.

"The Expressway presents a really exciting opportunity for businesses to get involved in this instrumental project, and we encourage people from across the business community - regardless of the size of your business - to come along and see how you might be able to contribute to this huge effort over the next four years."

"This work involves about $580m of construction activity, and it's literally on Kapiti's doorstep. This means the district doesn't have to wait until the road is finished before it begins to reap the economic benefits and jobs which come with such a massive investment in local infrastructure"

"People may be surprised at the range of expertise and services that will be required - it's a far more intricate and involved project than the common perception of pouring concrete and driving diggers."

"This work will provide jobs for locals and even attract a few new locals to the Kapiti Coast - in fact, this is already happening, but it's only the start."

The project will take four years to build and include:

• 18 bridges including 564 precast beams up to 75 tonnes each.
• 3,000,000 m³ earthworks.
• 2,500,000 tonnes imported aggregate.
• 70,000 m³ concrete.
• 10,000 tonnes reinforcing steel.
• 45 ha landscape and wetland planting (over one million plants).
• Expected to create approximately 1000 new jobs.

The open day will take place at Southward Car Museum on Otaihanga Road and will include presentations from Mr James and the M2PP Alliance team, and
the opportunity to network and ask questions.
