The NZ Transport Agency (NZTA) is putting an additional temporary traffic management plan in place on weekday afternoons, to reduce delays for peak traffic travelling through SH1 at Ruffell Road at the north end of Hamilton.
NZTA Waikato State Highways Manager Kaye Clark says the NZTA’s work at Te Rapa and work being carried out by Hamilton City Council on the Ring Road at Wairere Drive and The Base have been placing considerable pressure on the local road network.
Mrs Clark says during evening peak traffic periods on weekdays (4-7 pm), the north bound section of SH1 will be increased to two lanes just past the Church Road roundabout through to McKee Street. Traffic signal timings at Ruffell Road will also be adjusted during this evening peak traffic period.
“These adjustments will be in place by early this week,” says Mrs Clark. “We are also monitoring the signals at the Ruffell Rd intersection to improve the flow for through traffic on SH 1 at peak times; and talking to businesses in the area for their feedback on the situation.”
Mrs Clark says congestion is expected to drop markedly once the Te Rapa section opens to traffic on Monday, December 3.
“That will take a significant volume of traffic off this section of what is currently SH1. In the meantime, we’d like to thank motorists for their patience during what equates to short term pain for a long term gain.”
Mrs Clark also encourages motorists to start thinking about the new road layouts they’ll encounter once the Te Rapa section of the Waikato Expressway opens to traffic in three weeks’ time.
“The key is to avoid last-minute decision making while driving. The NZTA will have clear signage in place to assist motorists to understand the layout changes while they adjust to using the new addition to the Expressway.”
“However, taking some time out now to prepare for the upcoming changes will help people plan their journey more effectively and safely before they leave home.”
