The St Marks Road southbound on-ramp to the Southern Motorway will be closed temporarily from 11am Saturday 11 April until 3pm Friday 24 April.
The St Marks Road southbound on-ramp to the Southern Motorway (SH1) will be closed temporarily from 11am Saturday 11 April until 3pm Friday 24 April.
The closure is required to prepare the on-ramp for realignment as part of Stage 1 of the SH1 Newmarket Connection Viaduct Replacement Project. This first stage will see the southbound lanes of the old viaduct completely replaced with a safer and wider four-lane carriageway in time for the Rugby World Cup in 2011.
Work on the St Marks Road on-ramp will take place over the school and university holidays to minimise disruption to motorists.
“We are taking advantage of the lighter traffic flow to complete some essential preparation work in the area. When the first stage is complete, there will be four lanes heading south instead of three – a huge benefit for Aucklanders and visitors to the 2011 Rugby World Cup,” says Tommy Parker, NZ Transport Agency’s Northern State Highway Manager.
One lane of the on-ramp will reopen to traffic on Friday 24 April, allowing further work to continue on the far side of the on-ramp.
The NZTA thanks motorists and residents in advance for their cooperation.
A 24-hour free phone number, 0508 CONNECT (266 6328), has been set up to field enquiries. The project visitor centre, located at 5B Mahuru Street, is scheduled to open at the end of April.
