Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency is advising people that the intersection of Ōtaki Gorge Road and State Highway 1 (SH1) will be closed for approximately three months from Sunday 28 February for essential construction work on the Peka Peka to Ōtaki Expressway (PP2Ō).
The closure will allow the PP2Ō team to begin construction of the Ōtaki Gorge Road/SH1 intersection and northbound off-ramp at Ōtaki Gorge Road – a vital connection for the new PP2Ō Expressway.
A detour will be available using Hautere Cross Road, School Road and the new Te Horo Beach Road overbridge. Traffic heading north will use the existing SH1 intersection with Te Horo Beach Road and traffic heading south will use the existing intersection with School Road level crossing. Traffic movements will be restricted to left in/left out.
With the work having been timed alongside the opening of the Te Horo Beach Road overbridge, right turns in and out of these intersections have also been closed, so that no traffic is turning across SH1.
A 30km/h limit will be in place on School Road outside the school and at the intersection of Ōtaki Gorge Road and Hautere Link Road. The remainder of the diversion will have a 70km/h speed limit. A 50km/h speed restriction be in place on SH1 at the intersection of Te Horo Beach Road.
The closure was made following engagement and communications with the community to ensure regular users are aware of the detour. It is expected to be in place for 11 weeks, after which the next stage will begin by reopening Ōtaki Gorge Road and closing the School Road level crossing.
The Peka Peka to Ōtaki Expressway will provide motorists with safer, more reliable journeys, increase the efficiency of freight and movements to and from Wellington, help ease local congestion and assist in facilitating economic development in the area.
Waka Kotahi thanks motorists for their patience and understanding while these important works take place.
