During August there will be a number of changes around Bayfair roundabout and Bayfair Shopping Centre, as construction ramps up in the area as part of the Bay Link project.
The first of the temporary changes is to the first access to the Bayfair Shopping Centre from Girven Road.
The first access will temporarily close overnight on Sunday 7 August for about seven weeks to allow for the completion of the shopping centre’s entrance, and footpath construction in the area.
Temporary changes around Bayfair Shopping Centre and roundabout
To accommodate this work zone, Girven Road will be reduced to one lane for traffic travelling from the Bayfair roundabout towards Gloucester Road.
People wishing to enter or exit the Bayfair Shopping Centre carpark to and from Girven Road will be able to use the signalised intersection at Gloucester Road (opposite Baywave). Within the shopping centre carpark, one lane in each direction will be maintained between the work zone and the shopping centre, allowing access around Bayfair’s perimeter.
People walking and cycling between SH2/Maunganui Road and Girven Road should continue to follow the circular blue wayfinding stickers that connect the underpass with Girven Road.
The Girven Road entrance is expected to remain closed for approximately seven weeks, weather permitting. This is the final entrance to Bayfair Shopping Centre to be constructed as part of the Bay Link project.
In the event of bad weather or other unforeseen circumstances, the 7 August overnight closure may be moved to the next suitable night.
Next week, there will be a night closure at the SH2 Bayfair roundabout to allow the next beam lift to take place. Plans for a traffic switch at the SH2 Bayfair roundabout and for Girven Road are being finalised and information will be released mid-August.
People are asked to take extra care as they get used to the temporary layouts, especially during morning and evening peak times.
