As works get busier at the northern end of the Mackays to Peka Peka Expressway, the NZ Transport Agency is advising road users of a temporary change of access to two local roads from State Highway 1.
From the week starting Monday 15 August, access to and from Te Kowhai and Gary Roads will be via Peka Peka Road rather than directly off State Highway 1. The alternative route is expected to be in place for around two months.
The existing Te Kowhai Road intersection with State Highway 1 will be temporarily closed. Traffic to and from Te Kowhai and Gary Roads will be re-routed along a new link road at the top of Peka Peka Road. This is so Mackays to Peka Peka Expressway works on local and State Highway 1 connections at the northern end of the new Expressway can continue safely.
There’ll be clear signage indicating the road closure and the new route. A 30 km/h speed limit will be in place on the link road while the rest of Te Kowhai Road will remain at the current speed of 50 km/h.
“We recognise that this temporary road closure means a slight inconvenience for those who live along or visit Te Kowhai and Gary Roads, and we do appreciate their patience,” Neil Walker, State Highway Manager, NZ Transport Agency says.

The Mackays to Peka Peka (M2PP) Expressway is a $630 million, NZ Transport Agency project to build 18km of four-lane expressway along the Kāpiti Coast, north of Wellington. It is one of the sections that make up the Wellington Northern Corridor.
The M2PP Expressway is being delivered by the M2PP Alliance made up of the NZ Transport Agency, The Fletcher Construction Company Ltd, Beca Ltd and Higgins Contractors Ltd.
