Motorists are advised the Taramakau Road/Rail Bridge will be closed overnight this Sunday 2 February for periods of up to three hours for safety repairs to be carried out.
Essential maintenance work will be undertaken on both approaches to the State Highway 6 bridge to improve safety for cyclists and motorcyclists, says the NZ Transport Agency's Senior Network Manager Mark Pinner.
"The road surface at the two approaches has cracked and become uneven. It will be replaced with new asphalt, creating a smoother, level surface and safer approach to the bridge, in particular for cyclists and motorcyclists.
"Kiwirail are working with us to make sure the foundations under the railway line, and the road, are solidly compacted."
Mr Pinner says it is still intended to install rubber mats on the bridge, as soon as a working design is available, and to install a clip-on cycle lane later this year, subject to funding.
To enable Sunday's maintenance work to be carried out, the Taramakau Road/Rail Bridge will be closed to all motorists from 8pm to 11pm, 11.15pm to 1am and 1.15am to 3am, if required.
If wet, the bridge will be closed the following Sunday, 9 February, at the same times.
"The Transport Agency apologises in advance for any inconveniences caused by the closures," he says.
