The NZ Transport Agency and Gisborne District Council have agreed to dissolve the Tairāwhiti Roads partnership and replace it with a new shared services model for managing the transport network in Tairāwhiti.
The Tairāwhiti Roads partnership was established in March 2015 by the NZ Transport Agency and Gisborne District Council, with the expectation that it would deliver a better and more efficient service to the public.
“Tairāwhiti Roads has delivered some benefits to the region, including better asset management, increased regional investment and improved ability to respond to environmental events,” Transport Agency Director of Regional Relationships Emma Speight says.
“However, the Tairāwhiti Roads partnership has not always met the high expectations of the NZ Transport Agency, the Gisborne District Council, or the public.
“Tairāwhiti Roads staff worked hard to make the partnership work, but the challenges presented by both organisations retaining their own sets of policies, systems and processes were difficult to overcome.
“That’s why we have agreed to dissolve the partnership and move to a new shared services model from 1 August 2019.
“Under the new model, the NZ Transport Agency will retain a presence in Gisborne and manage the region’s state highways, while the Gisborne District Council will manage local roads – similar to how it works in other regions. This will enable staff to respond to their respective issues faster.
“We will look to retain the one point of contact for the community, encouraging people to contact the Gisborne District Council contact centre in the first instance. And both organisations will, for the next two years, share one contractor that responds to all issues on the transport network.
“With more transport investment in Tairāwhiti than ever, the NZ Transport Agency and Gisborne District Council are committed to keeping up the momentum and working together to deliver a better transport network for our community.”
