Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency advises that contractors will be undertaking essential maintenance activities across the Tairāwhiti region over the coming weeks.
Regional Transport Systems Manager Oliver Postings says these essential works allow Waka Kotahi’s contractors to ensure the roads remain safe for all road users.
“Safely maintaining New Zealand’s state highway network is considered vital at this time in order to ensure that critical functions to limit the spread of COVID-19 can continue.”
The maintenance work includes finishing line markings, filling pot holes and inspecting the roads to identify areas that may need repairs. This work will be undertaken at locations on State Highway 2 and State Highway 35 over the next few weeks.
Work will also be underway to clear metal from under Fairlies Bridge on State Highway 35.
This week, weather permitting, contractors will be working to replace a culvert on State Highway 2 near Waihīrere Straight.
Mr Postings asks people to be patient and considerate to roadworkers and look out for their safety and wellbeing.
“If you see contractors on the roads during the shutdown period please remember that they are carrying out vital work to keep us all safe.
“If you are using the roads during this period please remember to obey any temporary speed restrictions through roadworks to keep our workers safe.
“People should only head out for essential supplies or services, otherwise, please stay safe and stay home.
“If you must drive to access essential supplies or services please take care, drive to the conditions and adhere to the speed limits.”
