Drivers travelling into Wellington over the holiday break need to be alert to ongoing rockfall prevention works in the Ngauranga Gorge.
This work is essential. The Ngauranga Gorge is a busy corridor with a particularly steep hill beside it. From time-to-time loose rock and debris falls onto the path and road beneath, creating a safety hazard for highway users.
Contractors will work from 26 December to 8 January on the northern face of the gorge, installing rock anchors and a catch fence, placing mesh, and drilling new drains.
While this work is underway, there will be a 24/7 closure of the left-hand southbound traffic lane and the adjacent pathway used by pedestrians and cyclists. Pedestrians and cyclists must follow the detour route while these works are underway.
While this work has been timed for the holiday period to minimise disruption to road users when traffic volumes are at their lowest, delays are possible. Road users should factor this into their travel plans.
Waka Kotahi wants to thank the public for their patience and understanding while this essential safety work is carried out.
