State Highway 2 through Tararua has been a focus this summer maintenance season and good progress has been made. Works will continue from January 2023 as part of the country’s largest ever maintenance programme.
Waka Kotahi Maintenance and Operations Manager Rob Service says in November and December, over 20 sections of SH2 in Tararua received a new layer of seal.
“We’ve completed our reseal programme for the road, as well as two full rebuilds of sections of road on SH2 in Papatawa, north of Woodville, and near Edgeley Road, south of Norsewood.”
Renewal work on one section of SH2, north of Norsewood, which was scheduled to start this month was postponed due to forecasted rain, and this work will be completed later in the season.
On Tuesday 10 January, the planned rebuild of a 250m long section of the road at Kaiparoro, south of Eketāhuna will begin. Contractors will be on site between 6am and 6pm daily, including some Saturdays, and the work is expected to be completed by Wednesday 25 January. Stop/Go traffic management will be in place during work times, and motorists are advised that there will be a delay in travel times of up to 10 minutes at this site.
On Thursday 19 January, asphalt resurfacing on SH2 High Street in Dannevirke is scheduled to begin. This work will be undertaken each night between 7pm and 6am, excluding Saturday nights. While the resurfacing is underway, SH2 will be closed between Rawhiti Street and Swinburn Street with a detour in place:
“Footpaths on SH2 High Street in Dannevirke will remain open for pedestrian access to businesses during the road closures there, and people will be able to park on side streets,” says Mr Service.
Access to all local properties will be available throughout these works if needed, managed by Higgins Contractors Ltd.
Upcoming works are weather dependent and may be postponed at short notice.
In Pahiatua, SH2 Main Street at the Mangahao Road intersection is also programmed for asphalt resurfacing this season.
