The NZ Transport Agency (NZTA) is investing $600,000 repairing and earthquake strengthening to the landmark Aparima Bridge at Riverton in Western Southland.
Built in the 1930’s, the 135 metre bridge serves as an important road and freight link for the Southland region. All the work should be completed by the end of June 2013.
NZTA Southland Area Manager Peter Robinson says although the bridge is over 80 years old it is in reasonably good condition considering it is a fairly harsh marine environment.
“The work involves repairing corroded steel, damaged areas of concrete and earthquake strengthening the bridge. All of which is essential to ensure the bridge remains a key road and freight route into the future.”
Scaffolding will be installed in time for the contractors to start work later this week.
Mr Robinson said the contractor is working with Southland District Council to ensure water and wastewater pipes that are carried on the bridge are not damaged while this work is carried out. We have also talked to the Riverton harbourmaster to ensure the signposting of the scaffold does not encroach into the waterway below the bridge.
For the safety of motorists and the contractor there will be bridge closures of up to 15 minutes from time to time during March and April to allow critical work to be carried out. These closures will be advertised well ahead of them happening.
