Important safety improvements along State Highway 1 north of Taupō require stop/go traffic management from next week and road users may encounter delays.
NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi has two projects underway south of Ātiamuri to widen the road and fit flexible safety barriers.
Near Maroa Road, contractors are finishing works to a 4.5km section where barriers were installed last year. There will be 24/7 stop/go in place for two weeks from Monday 18 March.
Nearby, on the 6.9km section of SH1 south of the Waikato River bridge, stop/go will be in place 24/7 for three weeks south of Ohakuri Road starting from 19 March. Road widening is underway at this site for safety barrier installation. Work is behind temporary safety barriers and there will be a 50km/h speed restriction.
The lane closures also provide opportunities for maintenance work to be done.
The Ātiamuri works are part of a corridor-long focus to improve safety on the 93km between Piarere and Taupō, through road widening and the installation of flexible safety barriers.
Flexible safety barriers are installed down the middle of a road to prevent head-on collisions, or along the side of the road to help stop run-off-road crashes. These barriers catch vehicles before they hit something harder, like a pole, tree or oncoming car.
