12:15 am: State Highway 6, Renwick to Havelock, has reopened following a fatal crash earlier today.
Police have confirmed one person died in the multi-vehicle crash, which was reported at around 2:30 pm.
It saw State Highway 6 closed between Leslies Road and Lamberts Road for approximately nine hours while emergency services and contractors attended the crash and worked to reopen the road.
With traffic volumes expected to increase on Easter Monday as people return home after the holiday weekend, drivers are urged to take extra care on the roads.
With two fatal crashes on Marlborough state highways since last Thursday, NZTA/Waka Kotahi is asking all road users to drive to the conditions and watch their speeds and following distances.
Make sure everyone in your vehicle is wearing a seatbelt, and please be patient in holiday traffic. Share the roads with care so that everyone can reach their destinations safely.
3.40 pm:
State Highway 6 remains closed between Renwick and Havelock as emergency services and contractors attend a serious crash near Okaramio.
State Highway 6 is closed between Leslies Road and Mount Riley Road. Drivers must avoid the area and use alternative routes.
Light vehicles can detour Queen Charlotte Drive between Havelock to Picton – this route is not suitable for heavy vehicles or truck and trailer units.
Another alternative route between Nelson and Blenheim is via State Highway 63 St Arnaud and State Highway 6, Glenhope to Wakefield.
Both routes require longer journey times, and drivers must factor this into their travel plans.
With the Police Crash Unit attending, the highway is likely to remain closed for several hours while a crash investigation is carried out.
3.15pm:
A serious crash has closed State Highway 6 in Marlborough between Renwick and Havelock.
The multi-vehicle crash near the Mount Riley Road intersection was reported around two-thirty this afternoon.
The highway is currently closed between Leslies Road and Mount Riley Road.
Emergency services are at the scene, and Police confirm the Serious Crash Unit has been notified.
This means the highway is expected to be closed for several hours while Police investigate the crash.
Drivers should avoid the area or delay their journey. No local road detours are available.
The only available alternative route between Nelson and Blenheim is via State Highway 63 St Arnaud, and State Highway 6, Glenhope to Wakefield.
This route is significantly longer and will add to travel times. Drivers, particularly those with ferry connections in Picton, must plan their journeys accordingly.
