State Highway 6, from Greymouth to Punakaiki, has been reduced to single-lane traffic for the remainder of today (29 July) after a debris fall at Twelve Mile this morning.
Both lanes were closed for a couple of hours this morning after heavy overnight rain brought about 50 cubic metres of debris down onto the highway about 20km north of Greymouth.
The NZ Transport Agency’s Performance Manager Pete Connors says a vehicle travelling along the highway came round a corner and ran into the material on the highway, the occupant being shaken but uninjured.
“State Highway 6 will remain single-lane through the area for the remainder of today while a geotechnical inspection is undertaken at the site to ensure it is safe to re-open the highway to two lanes later today.”
He says there is no history of slips at the site.
