Contractors have wrapped up major road reconstruction work on State Highway 6 south of Nelson.
The works at Foxhill had been underway for over two months. Road crews have just finished the final touches on the 1.8 km stretch of highway.
Rob Service, System Manager Top of the South, says a huge amount of work has been done to rehabilitate the road and bring it back up to scratch.
“Before we started, the pavement on this piece of road was at the end of its life, and it needed significant rehabilitation.”
Mr Service says contractors had to dig the road out and make major improvements to its subgrade, with initial investigations showing more work was needed than initially expected.
“Despite this, the team at Fulton Hogan managed to finish the job on time. It has been a tremendous effort, with around 13 thousand tonnes of rock and 21 thousand square metres of chipseal used on the project.
Mr Service says the result is a much smoother, safer, and more durable section of state highway.
“Major works like this are disruptive, and we appreciate they have meant longer travel times for road users. But the good news is the new and improved road is here and ready for the busy holiday season. We look forward to seeing drivers enjoying this new and improved stretch of State Highway 6,” Mr Service says.
Some further minor safety works are planned at the site. Contractors will return early next year to install a gabion wall and a guardrail.
