The tree has been removed and the highway is now open to all traffic.

With strong winds still affecting Wellington and Wairarapa and Metservice weather warnings in place until midnight, drivers are urged to be cautious on the roads and drive to the conditions.
Extra care is needed in exposed areas, particularly for those driving of high-sided vehicles (vans, trucks, campervans), as well as motorcyclists and cyclists.
State Highway 59 remains closed in Pukerua Bay as contractors and arborists work to remove a dangerous tree to prevent it falling onto the highway.
Crews are working as quickly as possible to remove the tree, but this is expected to take until early this evening to complete.
The highway is now closed at Fisherman’s Table (Ames Street) in the north and Gray Street to the south. Access is available for affected residents.
Drivers should continue to avoid the area and use an alternative route.

State Highway 59 is closed between Gray Street and Teihana Road West.
