The NZ Transport Agency advises drivers using State Highway 1 between Kaikoura and Cheviot that the road will reopen to one lane with traffic management in the next half hour with two lanes likely to be restored by 9pm.
A double fatality crash on the Hundalees this afternoon closed the highway.
The crash occurred 8 km north of the Conway River and 5 km southwest of Oaro thisafternoon. The Police Serious Crash Unit attended.
