People can expect to see lots of construction if they’re travelling on State Highway 1 between Porirua and Johnsonville throughout August and September, as work continues to make Wellington’s motorway network easier to use and more responsive.
With the Transmission Gully motorway project in its final stages, Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency is preparing the transport network for the changes it will bring, while encouraging people to think about different ways to improve their journeys to help keep the roads clear of congestion.
Regional Maintenance and Operations Manager Mark Owen says new technology and signage is being installed to help people navigate the roads more easily and keep them informed of any incidents or crashes ahead.
“Everything we are installing is designed to make the experience of travelling on our motorway better. It includes new electronic signage to advise of incidents or estimated journey times and help keep traffic flowing, and new CCTV to help our teams monitor how well the motorway is flowing.”
To avoid disrupting construction on the Transmission Gully motorway, the work will start at Johnsonville and move progressively north. While most of the work generally won’t disrupt motorists, there will be some parts of the project that require overnight road closures or diversions.
“We’re getting very good at installing this sort of infrastructure quickly and efficiently, but we have to make sure it’s being done safely. We’ll be doing this work at night to minimise any disruption to travellers and letting people know well in advance about detours or lane closures,” Mr Owen says.
There will be multiple crews working between Tawa and Johnsonville under lane closures Sunday to Thursday nights from 7pm to 5.30am.
This work is part of ongoing improvements that are being made to the regional state highway network, and is planned to continue for several months, up to and beyond the opening of the Transmission Gully motorway.
