The NZ Transport Agency advises drivers travelling on State Highway 1 through Kaikoura/ the Conway River/ Hundalees area to expect delays due to a serious crash.
The crash occurred 8 km north of the Conway River and 5 km southwest of Oaro this afternoon. The Police Serious Crash Unit is attending.

Southbound drivers can use the inland Kaikoura Road and Leader Road, northbound drivers Leader Road and the inland Kaikoura Road. The detour adds an hour to the journey however the closure of the highway could be for several hours. Truck drivers are asked not to take the back route if possible and delay their journeys.
Kaikoura and Cheviot are the nearest towns north and south of the crash for drivers to delay their journey.
