State Highway 1 is closed between Cambridge and Karapiro following a fatal crash in the early hours of this morning.
Road users should expect delays, as traffic is already building up.
The detour is via Maungatautari road and through Cambridge. Heavy vehicles are advised to use SH29/SH27.
Northbound traffic turn left onto Maungatautari Rd, straight through to Browning St, right onto Shakespeare St, left onto Achilles St, right onto Albert St, left onto Queen St, then right on to Victoria St, re-join SH1.
Reverse for southbound traffic - take Hautapu exit.
The serious crash unit is investigating after the crash between a vehicle and an ambulance at 3.39am
Police advise that the driver of the vehicle has sadly died at the scene.
The driver of the ambulance is in a critical condition and has been taken to Waikato Hospital.
Waka Kotahi is advising travellers that SH1 will remain closed for some time.
