Construction is expected to start later this month on the new Woodlands passing lanes on State Highway 1 about 12 km north of Invercargill.
The Transport Agency has let a $1.85M contract to SouthRoads Ltd to the build the Woodlands passing lanes, which are expected to be operational by the end of September 2015.
Transport Agency Otago-Southland Highway Manager Ian Duncan, says currently, the nearest passing lane for those driving south towards Invercargill on State Highway 1, is at Edendale, about 30km from the city; and for those heading north from Invercargill, it’s further again with the closest passing lane, located just north of Mataura.
“Limited passing opportunities on this stretch of highway are a source of frustration for drivers, which in turn has led to some crashes caused by ‘risky’ overtaking manoeuvres.
At the same time, there has been ongoing growth in dairying, in particular tankers servicing Fonterra’s Edendale plant, which has also significantly increased the number of heavy vehicles on this route. Truck numbers from this site are expected to grow even further following future upgrades of the plant”, he said.
During the early stages of the Woodlands passing lane construction, the traffic will be reduced to one lane with either traffic signals or stop/slow control outside of peak traffic hours; outside of construction hours i.e. at night, both traffic lanes will be operating. Throughout the construction period temporary speed restrictions will be operating at the site. The Transport Agency appreciates the patience of motorists over this time.
Mr Duncan said these new passing lanes will help ensure the highway network plays its part in the wider Southland transport network by supporting the efficient movement of freight, and contributing to safe reliable journeys for road users in the region.
