The New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) is not expecting the re-sealing of up to 4km of SH6a Frankton Road near Queenstown next month to cause major disruptions for road users.
An exact start date for this NZTA project stretching from Yewlett Crescent to Suburb Street will be confirmed early next month. This sealing was not fully completed by the contractor during the last summer construction season.
NZ Transport Agency (NZTA) Central Otago Area Manager John Jarvis says two separate contractors are involved. Downer is carrying out remedial work to sections of seal they laid earlier this year at their cost. Meanwhile, Fulton Hogan is resurfacing under a new $500,000 contract, further sections of the highway towards Queenstown.
“The work will generally be carried out between the hours of 7.00am and 5.30pm with two - way traffic flow in place to minimise disruption to motorists.”
Some short delays are inevitable particularly at property entrances. During the few times where two-way traffic cannot be maintained, the work will be done at night, or during off-peak traffic times Mr Jarvis said.
A letter explaining the work will be hand delivered in the next week to affected businesses and households. John Jarvis added that accommodation establishments will also be contacted in-person by the contractor as the work approaches their premises. Depending on the weather the resurfacing works should be completed by Christmas. Mr Jarvis says we appreciate there will be some inconvenience for motorists, but they can look forward to a better road surface once this job is completed. Cycle lanes are also being put in as part of the work.
Further resurfacing work on SH6A is planned from Suburb Street to Ballarat Street in early 2012 - further details will be released closer to the time.
