The NZ Transport Agency says it’s on to track to complete in the next three weeks the first stage of a project to make a series of tight bends on SH8 near Raes Junction safer.

The work is part of an $850,000 project to improve safety on this section of highway that has a history of crashes over the years.  Stage 1 involving earthworks should be finished next month, with Stage 2 of the project involving pavement construction and sealing starting in spring.

To create room for this new road alignment drilling and blasting work has been necessary. The New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) says subject to weather conditions further blasting is planned on Wednesday 29 April and again on Friday 1 May resulting in delays of up to 30 minutes between 10:00am and 10:30am.

Outside of these the extended delays work will continue between 8:00am and 6:00pm Monday to Friday with one lane, one-way traffic operating, although motorists could face delays of up to 15 minutes during these times.

The NZTA regrets any inconvenience to road users and appreciates their patience while this vital safety work is carried out.

Information on this project will also be available on the NZTA’s Highway Info website at www.highwayinfo.govt.nz(external link).
