Tekapo and Burkes Pass residents, business owners and road users are invited to a meeting in Tekapo next Wednesday afternoon to talk about speed limits.
“In the last three years, residents and the Mackenzie District Council have raised their concerns with us about the speed people travel in both Tekapo and Burkes Pass,” says Jim Harland, Director of Regional Relationships for the NZ Transport Agency.
“As a result, we want to review the speeds in both towns, and invite both communities to tell us their views are on the current speed limits in these towns.”
State Highway 8, which connects Christchurch to Queenstown and also takes people to Aoraki/ Mt Cook, has got busier in recent years as visitor numbers have grown and Tekapo has expanded its footprint. Further expansion is also on the horizon.
“The views of residents and highway users and the technical information currently being gathered will then be used by the Transport Agency to make a recommendation on safe and appropriate speeds,” says Mr Harland.
“In keeping with the legislation for undertaking speed reviews, there will then be a formal consultation with the general public before a final decision is made and any changes implemented.”
Residents are invited to attend a session to discuss their views with Transport Agency staff on Wednesday, 28 August from 3–5 pm at Reflections Café, SH8, Tekapo.
