The NZ Transport Agency says State Highway 25 (SH25) at the southern entrance to Whangamata will have a temporary speed restriction of 70 km/h over the summer holiday period.
The Transport Agency says the reduced speed limit on SH25 is to factor in the increased numbers of vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians using this 1.7km section of the highway, which is just south of Hilton Drive through to 250m south of Widdison Place.
A permanent lowered speed limit along this section is something the Transport Agency is considering in the future with formal consultation on this proposal likely to be early in the new year.
The Transport Agency’s principal safety engineer, Michelle Te Wharau hopes locals and visitors to the popular summer destination will see the merit in reducing speed at the southern entrance to Whangamata.
“Whangamata attracts a large influx of summer holiday visitors and this section of SH25 becomes very busy, not just with cars, but also cyclists and pedestrians,” says Mrs Te Wharau.
“We want everyone to enjoy their holidays and stay safe, and that’s the reason for the temporary speed reduction.”
