The NZ Transport Agency has confirmed it will lower the speed limit on a section of State Highway 10 at Kerikeri as part of its strategy to reduce speed related crashes.
An existing speed limit of 80 km/h will be extended over a nearly 2 kilometre stretch of road. This means the speed limit will reduce from 100 km/h to 80 km/h from just south of Kerikeri Road, to a point 500m north of Waimate North Road.
The NZ Transport Agency’s Highway Manager Brett Gliddon says increased development in the area has seen more cars on this section of State Highway 10 and a corresponding increase in crashes.
“Lowering the speed limit through the area is part of the Transport Agency’s ongoing commitment to creating safer journeys by reducing the number of deaths and serious injuries on our roads through the Safe System approach.”
“It recognises that people make mistakes and are vulnerable in a crash, and aims to reduce the price paid for a mistake so crashes don't result in death or serious injuries. This includes building safer roads, and encouraging people to drive their vehicles at safe speeds.”
“All of the Transport Agency’s road safety partners unequivocally support this road safety initiative in Kerikeri.”
The speed limit changes will come into effect from Thursday 25 June 2015. New signs and markings along the highway will highlight the new lower speed limit and encourage drivers to slow down.
