The NZ Transport Agency is advising New Plymouth travellers that one lane of southbound traffic will be diverted onto the new Waiwhakaiho Bridge as construction continues on the Vickers to City project.
The traffic switch is expected to happen on Sunday or Monday, and will enable crews to upgrade the road surface on the southbound lane of the existing highway.
The right turn lane to Fitzroy will remain unchanged for now.
This will mean road users heading south will need to make lane changes for Northgate or Fitzroy as early as possible (vehicles exiting Bridle Street will need to access Fitzroy via Mangorei Road).
Queens Road will also be opened to traffic at this time.
The opening is weather dependant, so motorists are asked to keep their eyes peeled for the electronic message boards, which will inform people when the changes are happening.
The footpaths from Bridle Street and Queens Road, across the new bridge to connect with the Waiwhakaiho Walkway will be made available for pedestrians at the same time.
The Transport Agency thanks the public for their patience and understanding while it builds this important project. The project is due to be completed mis-2016.
The project is being built on behalf of the Government, and will deliver on the Government’s goals of economic growth, road safety and improved travel choices.
