Southbound lanes on Auckland's Northern Motorway re-open

The NZ Transport Agency says the southbound lanes on Auckland’s Northern Motorway (State Highway) 1 were re-opened at 6.40am today. The motorway’s northbound lanes remain shut.

The motorway in both directions between the Tristram Avenue and Constellation Drive interchanges had been closed at about 2.30am after a Police incident.

The Transport Agency says that traffic heading into the city is heavy and early morning southbound queues were several kilometres long as far as Oteha Valley.

“Even with the southbound lanes open, it will take some time to clear congestion – particularly with the heavy volume of traffic during the morning peak,” says the NZTA’s Regional Traffic Manager, Kathryn Musgrave.  “We ask people to be patient and delays their journeys if possible – we will work as quickly as possible to clear congestion.”

The NZTA says it has not been advised by the Police when the motorway’s northbound lanes will re-open and drivers heading north are asked to use the Northwestern (SH16) and Hobsonville/Upper Harbour (SH18)  motorways as alternatives.
