The NZ Transport Agency closed State Highway 6 between Haast and Fox Glacier after 8 am today due to a slip at Black Creek – between Fox Glacier and Karangaroa.
The slip was caused by heavy rain which brought down vegetation across the road. Contractors were working to clear the road with an update expected around 11 am. Check this map(external link) – black pointers are closures, or the table version.(external link)
There has been some surface flooding due to the heavy rain and strong winds along the coastal highway, particularly between Haast and Whataroa, half-way to Hokitika.
ALPINE PASSES OPEN
There were heavy snow showers through the Lewis and Arthurs Passes overnight with snow ploughing required but drivers were able to get through.
