The NZ Transport Agency says slip clearance work has resumed on SH3 in the Manawatū Gorge after poor weather and hazardous conditions forced a temporary halt to work earlier this week.
Heavy rain over the last 48 hours has helped to bring down rocks and other loose material which were hanging over the road following a 2,000 cubic metre slip which came down overnight on Sunday 14th May.
Transport Agency Highway Manager Ross I’Anson says the remaining loose material was cleared by helicopter sluicing today, and crews will be working hard to remove the debris from the road throughout the weekend.
While the exact timing will depend on conditions on the ground and the possibility of any further slips, Mr I’Anson says everything possible will be done to re-open the gorge road to a single lane by the end of next week.
“We know how vital this route is for people in the region and we are focussed on re-opening the road as soon as possible. Our crews will be clearing material as quickly as possible to get the job done.”
With the Pahiatua Track and the Saddle Road as alternative routes, motorists are also being reminded to be patient, drive to the conditions and watch their speeds when driving through the communities along the alternate route.
