Vehicle restrictions for bridge strengthening work on the Kawarau River (Bungy) Bridge on State Highway 6 between Cromwell and Queenstown are being extended until next Friday, 25 July 2014.
The vehicle restrictions that started on Monday 14 July have seen the bridge reduced to a single lane and a 10km/h speed restriction put in place 24 hours a day.
NZ Transport Agency Highway Network Operations Manager John Jarvis says the extension of the vehicle in restrictions is to complete some additional deck strengthening that will prolong the life of the bridge. This work is now expected to be completed by the end of Friday 25 July and cause minimal delays to normal traffic as no full bridge closures are required.
“Road transport operators have been advised of restrictions that apply to permitted overweight vehicles while this work is being carried out. ”
Mr Jarvis says this particular job is part of one of the final phases of a $1.1 million strengthening project that started in January to extend the life of the 50-year-old bridge.
Onsite electronic signs will provide motorists with the latest information on restrictions. For more information about the project, click here or phone 0800 4 HIGHWAYS (0800 44 44 49).
