The Transport Agency says the Beaumont Bridge on State Highway 8 between Milton and Alexandra could be subject to a continuous 36 hours closure this week.
The closure, essential to replace a load bearing beam within the bridge structure, starts from 7am on Wednesday 13 May. While the job is expected to be completed within 24 hours it could take up to 36 hours if there are any unexpected issues.
Motorists are urged should allow extra time when travelling to and from Central Otago over this period.
Well-signposted detours are available.
Motorists travelling from Dunedin to Central Otago should continue on to Balclutha, then turn right into either Gormack Street or Barnego Road and drive inland to Clydevale. This adds a further 20km of travel. For those heading from Central Otago, the same detour is signposted from Beaumont.
If driving an over-weight vehicle, the relevant permit will be required to travel on this detour route.
Another option for those wanting to drive to or from Alexandra is via State Highway 85 to Dunedin.
The latest information about the closure will be available on www.highwayinfo.govt.nz(external link) or on 0800 44 44 49.
