Motorists can expect delays along a short section of State Highway 8 (SH8) between Alexandra and Roxburgh, Central Otago, this month.
The NZ Transport Agency says delays of up to five minutes are likely, while works are carried out on the section of SH8 between the Alexandra Bridge and the Earnscleugh Road intersection.
Safety improvement work has just got underway, involving road widening to provide a right turn bay into the Earnscleugh Road intersection. This project should be completed by Friday, 19 May.
Meanwhile, cleaning of the Alexandra Bridge begins on Monday, 15 May and is expected to be finished a fortnight later on Friday, 26 May. The work will be carried out by abseilers accessing the bridge structure from a mobile boom lift. They will remove pigeon debris from the bridge and carry out minor patch painting to prevent damage to the steel structure.
The bridge carriageway will be reduced to a single lane between the hours of 9am – 5pm week days while this work is carried out. Traffic flows during these times will be managed by temporary traffic lights.
The safety upgrade at the Earnscleugh Road intersection and the bridge cleaning are expected to cost $125,000 and $55,000 respectively.
The Transport Agency thanks everyone for their patience and for taking care while this important safety work is completed leading into winter.
