SH6 expected to be open to one lane over weekend
SH6 between Renwick and Richmond is expected to be opened to one lane over the weekend as long as the slip area can be stabilised.
NZTA Wellington State Highways Manager Rob Whight says a further slip occurred overnight increasing the original 500 cubic metres to 2500 cubic metres this morning after more rain. Our contractor is continuing to work on clearing the material and stabilising the hill.
“We need to be sure it’s safe to put people back on the road so until we’re satisfied it’s OK for people to use the highway the detour around the slip site will remain,” Mr Whight says.
“We’d like to pass on our thanks for the way heavy vehicle drivers have followed our advice during this time. It’s much appreciated. We will allow access as soon as possible,” he says.
NZTA will have staff on site over the weekend if the road has not been reopened to assist people using the detour around the sip site. We ask for everyone’s patience and understanding until the road is reopened.
Mr Whight says an accumulation of factors, including rain, is the main cause of the incident.
